Simple steps anyone can take to make someone else's day a little brighter.

Almost a decade ago the movie Pay it Forward was released into theaters. It told a heart warming story of a young child who tried to make the world a better place. The concept of the film was well received by audiences and a brief 'pay it forward' phenomenon surfaced in North America. This child's message of making the world a more humane place to live is one worth revisting.

Many people give something to receive something back. It could be a hug, a handshake, or a personal favor. Often times, when the effort is made to do something nice for someone, there is a conscious (or unconscious) expectation that this favor will one day be returned.

Anonymous Giving

There is nothing wrong in having expectations of other people. The quote “treat others the way you would like to be treated” definitely does send a positive message and encourages goodwill within society. However, there is a special gift in anonymous giving, wherein the only thing received is the joy of knowing someone’s day was made brighter based on a random act of kindness. It only takes a minute, and just a little bit of effort, to commit a selfless act.

Tips on How to Pay-it-Forward

Here are a few simple ways to reap the silent rewards of selfless giving.

  1. Leave a friendly and anonymous note or sweet treat on a co-workers desk.
  2. In the winter clean the snow of your car and the one next to you.
  3. If you have something nice to say, say it.
  4. At a drive-thru, pay for the order of the car behind you.
  5. Anonymously send flowers to a family member or friend.
  6. Volunteer for a non-profit organization.
  7. Leave a large tip on a small bill.
  8. On a busy subway or bus, stand, so that someone else can sit.
  9. Make a donation. Most people have things they no longer use or need, give it away to a local charity.
  10. Smile at a stranger. One smile can go a long way to someone having a terrible day.

Ultimately, when someone gives something, they always receive something back. It may not always be tangible but it will always be worthwhile. The world can often be a chaotic, crazy, depressing place to live; however, the world can easily become a little brighter when someone commits a random act of kindness.

This short list is meant to inspire people to pursue a more fulfilling way of life. Please feel free to comment on this article and post some more ideas on how to pay it forward
